Common questions

Questions Swedish borrowers ask us

The answers are checked against the primary sources listed under Sources and updated after the 2025–2026 rule changes.

What does it cost to use Kreddo?

Nothing. The service is free for you as a consumer. We are paid by the lender when someone signs an agreement through our links, but that payment never affects placement in our tables — the ranking is driven entirely by the calculated total cost.

How many credit checks are made when I apply through a broker?

Only one. The broker runs a single credit check and then passes the same application on to every connected bank. Apply directly to five banks and you get five checks, which can lower your credit rating.

What is the 2026 rate cap?

The nominal rate on a consumer credit may not exceed the reference rate plus 20 percentage points. The reference rate is 2.00% for the second half of 2026, giving a cap of 22.00%. Mortgages are exempt.

What does the cost cap mean?

The total cost of credit — interest, fees, penalty interest and debt collection costs — may never exceed the original loan amount. Borrow SEK 30,000 and you can never owe more than SEK 60,000 in total.

Can I get a loan with a betalningsanmärkning?

Yes, but the choice is narrower and the rate higher. A betalningsanmärkning is a Swedish credit register note recording that you failed to pay a debt on time; it stays for three years. Svea Bank, Marginalen Bank, Avida and several of the brokers' partner banks lend despite one. Svea Bank is one of the few that will also consider you with an ongoing debt at Kronofogden, the Swedish Enforcement Authority.

Can I still deduct loan interest on a personal loan?

No. The deduction for unsecured loans was tapered during 2025 and removed entirely from 1 January 2026. Interest on personal loans, credit cards and quick loans now costs you the full amount. Mortgages and other secured loans are unaffected.

How quickly do I get the money?

Revolving credits such as Brixo pay out in around 15 minutes, around the clock. Niche banks normally pay the same banking day if you sign before 13:00. Major banks and brokers usually take one to two banking days because the money passes through Bankgirot.

What is the difference between nominal and effective rate?

The nominal rate is the interest rate itself. The effective rate also includes the arrangement fee, invoice fees and the compounding of interest, expressed as an annual figure. Always compare the effective rate — it is the only number that shows what the loan actually costs.

Can I repay the loan early?

Yes. Under the Swedish Consumer Credit Act you always have the right to repay an unsecured loan early at no extra cost. The lender may charge interest up to the settlement date, but no penalty. You also have 14 days to withdraw from the agreement.

Is consolidating debt worth it?

It pays off when your current credits carry a higher rate than the new consolidation loan and you keep the same term or a shorter one. Extend the term and the monthly cost falls but the total cost rises — always work from the total, not the monthly figure.
